Phantom
Stranger awakened disoriented, not knowing if he'd
been asleep or dead (he'd been killed during the
Dr. Fate miniseries). Elsewhere, in Gotham City,
Commissioner Gordon surveyed a murder site where
several men had been killed at close range with
an uzi. War and natural disasters rocked the planet.
The Stranger burst into a congregation in the Temple
of the Divine Light. The church's leader, Lycaon,
professed that he did not fear the Stranger or the
darkness from which he came. A demon appeared. As
they fought, Gordon and his men were called in.
Phantom Stranger was astonished when Gordon shot
the creature and it disappeared.
The stranger emerged next in the presence of Eclipso.
They discussed the end times, and Stranger vanished.
He enlisted the help of Bruce Gordon.
A scientist at STAR Labs noted strange seismic activity. |

The
Phantom Stranger told Bruce Gordon they could fight
Eclipso, but it would do no good. The Lords of Order
appeared and released the Stranger from his servitude.
They told of the future: the Age of Darkness would
come, followed by a new age of Order. Due to his
lack of faith, the Lords grabbed him up.
Natural disasters continued to occur as the Soviet
Union appeared to ready for war.
Gordon and the Stranger visited with Dr. Klyburn,
who still believed an outside force (Eclipso) was
causing the seismic activity. She joined them and
they traveled to the Mt. St. Helens area. Though
he'd been stripped of his inner magics, the Phantom
Stranger used mana from his surroundings to travel
to another plane. He began battling Eclipso's demons.
Dr. Klyburn went into the volcano with a laser weapon
"borrowed" from STAR. She fired it into
weak points in the fault and was swallowed up. Below
her, she saw the Stranger battling demons. Using
the laser, she blasted Eclipso. After falling, the
Stranger picked up the weapon. Eclipso's demon exploded
and the pair found themselves back on Earth with
Bruce. |

The
Phantom Stranger, stripped of his powers, adjusted
to being a mortal. Colonel Vostok attempted to get
word to the President that an outside force was
playing both sides in the tension between the US
and USSR. The Daily Planet's Jimmy Olsen, tracking
down a story, was caught by a demon. The Phantom
Stranger intervened.
The Stranger, Bruce Gordon, and Jimmy Olsen stood
outside the White House. The sorcerer told the others
they must go in to avert nuclear war. Stranger disappeared;
Olsen and Gordon saw Rizzoli merge with the President.
As he was giving the launch orders, the Phantom
Stranger appeared and attacked the "President."
He was able to grasp the demon and teleport outside.
The demon was defeated and the real President went
back in to avert the war. |

Eclipso,
defeated twice, gave instruction to Lycaon. Colonel
Vostok infiltrated the temple from where Lycaon
would be broadcasting, but he was prepared for her.
The Phantom Stranger and Eclipso met at Stonehenge.
The Stranger flew at him with rage and realized
he'd been touched by evil. Eclipso's feign worked
and he defeated the Stranger. Binded, he was forced
to watch Lycaon's sermon. He escaped his bindings
and went after Eclipso again.
A demon spawned on the sun.
As the battle raged on Lycaon's stage, Vostok escaped
and got into the broadcast control room. She was
able to break the spell the broadcast had over its
viewers. The Stranger felt his powers returning
through the hopes of mankind. He used the light
to destroy the sun-eating demon along with Eclipso.
