Superman
saw an explosion in downtown Metropolis and went
to investigate. Above, he found a ribbon of energy.
When he touched it, he was thrown back more than
three miles. When he got back to it, Captain Atom,
Martian Manhunter, and the Justice League were there.
Dr. Fate noted it as being mystic in nature. When
Green Lantern (Guy) attempted to probe it, he was
knocked unconscious and the city faced a blackout.
The energy split. Superman went after one half,
while Martian Manhunter went after the other. Superman's
struck a genetics lab, entered a computer, then
left. J'onn's flew into a funeral home and caused
a body to disappear. The two energies returned to
their original location and merged. Using the items
it had collected, the energy created itself a body.
The creature collapsed, and the JLA got it to STAR
Labs. Superman used his X-Ray vision on it - the
outside was a fully grown man, but his organs were
not fully developed. He believed the creature housed
the potential energy of an Earth-threatening atomic
bomb. Blue Beetle dubbed him "the Weird."
The Weird awakened and began babbling. Batman told
him they must take him off world, as he was a thread.
Green Lantern encased him, but the Weird simply
walked out of the bubble. No matter what the Justice
League threw at the Weird, he eluded them.
The Weird arrived at the apartment of who he referred
to as "my enemy ... the Jason," Jason
Morgan. He then found the family of the man who's
body he was using. |

The
Weird, now being sought by Superman, showed his
"son" what he was and what he could do.
He explained that though he may look and sound like
his father (and have his memories), he was, in fact,
not him. He told the boy about the Jason, and how
he'd created a portal for the evil of his society
(the macrolatts) to invade the Earth. The Weird
was here to protect against the Jason and his ability
to open another portal for the macrolatts (he was
a zarolatt).
The Weird dropped his "son" off and returned
to his quest.
Superman caught up with his prey and gave chase.
The Weird tried evading him by becoming intangible,
but Superman simply bashed through everything the
Weird phased through. Eventually, the inter-dimensional
being escaped by causing structural damage to a
building - Superman had to stop it from falling.
After Superman flew away, the Weird told a reporter
that he was unstable and the heroes were afraid
he'd blow up half the planet.
The Weird caught up with the Jason, who was attempting
to reopen the portal. |

| storyline |
The
Justice League watched the building where the Weird
and the Jason fought. Guy attempted to go in, but
the Jason put up a force field around the building.
After finally encasing the Weird in a vibrational
bubble, the Jason rattled off his backstory and
told him how special he was and why he was willing
to turn his back on the human race for the macrolatts.
The Jason completed his spell and two macrolatts
were unleashed on the Earth. The Weird was able
to get himself out of his containment with the Jason
in a state of fatigue. The Weird killed Jason Morgan
in order to save Earth from more macrolatts. The
force field he'd created faded away, showing his
dead body to the Justice League. The Weird attempted
to explain what had happened to the Justice League.
Superman and Nuklon (of Infinity, Inc.) were taken
as host bodies of the macrolatts. The confronted
the Justice League, who was preparing to transport
the Weird off the planet. |

Batman
woke the Weird up and ordered him to tell him why
Superman and Nuklon were attacking them. After they
defeated the Justice League, the macrolatt-possessed
began destroying everything near them. The Weird,
posing as having come to his senses, offered himself
to the macrolatts. When they agreed, he reached
inside Superman and Nuklon and pulled his enemies
out. He destroyed them and gave himself up to the
Justice League.
At STAR Labs, Superman discovered he was just as
unstable as he'd ever been. Knowing he only had
2 days before exploding, the Weird asked the heroes
for a favor. He began building a boat out of sand
off a northeastern coast. Superman brought his son
to the Weird. They said their good-byes before Superman
and Green Lantern transported the Weird to an uninhabited
section of space were he exploded. |

| Notes,
references to time, and chronology: |
|
"This
story takes place before Justice League #7" (editorial
caption, issue 1) |
|
Captain
Atom is participating with the Justice League which would
put this during or after issue 7. |
|
Problem:
GL (Guy) is himself, which would put this before getting
knocked out by Batman in issue 5. Of note, Guy is "gentle"
during the Millennium event
which takes place after JL:
A New Beginning. |
