| Storyline |
When
a man was murdered in the library where she worked,
Barbara Gordon remembered the first time she'd been
injured as Batgirl: four years previous against
a man named Cormorant. She found his hat near the
body. After closing down the library and handing
the scene over to her father's men, Barbara went
home and readied her gear before going to bed.
Another body was found the next morning. Both victims
had been accused of violent crimes against women.
Barbara's friend Marcy came for a visit. She begged
her to give up the Batgirl gig.
Another man was killed for crimes against women.
The killer did it on a busy street in broad daylight.
Barbara got into costume and went after Cormorant.
She watched as he took a phone call (a contract
to kill the killer, dubbed "Slash" by
the media) and cleaned his weapons. Marcy called
out to her and drove her back to the city. She convinced
Batgirl to go after Slash before Cormorant.
Slash met with her boss and was told to kill Cormorant
before he killed her.
Batgirl caught up with Slash as she struck at her
next victim. Slash got the best of her; Batgirl
took a knife to the shoulder; the target was killed;
Slash escaped.
Barbara went home and announced to Marcy that she
quit. Marcy patched up her wound. They talked, and
Barbara realized she was better off fighting crime
using a computer and reporting to the police ...
after this case was closed. She went to Cormorant's
house. He pulled a gun on her. Batgirl was saved
by Slash, who put a knife in Cormorant. As she and
Batgirl fought, Cormorant made his escape. He returned
with a gun in each hand. Batgirl dropped some smoke
grenades and got out of the crossfire. She tried
to keep Slash from killing the man, but his own
wife gave her a gun. Slash collapsed after killing
Cormorant.
When Barbara got home, she gave her costume to Marcy
and officially retired as Batgirl.
