Storyline Chapter 1: Masquerade
James Gordon laughed at his daughter when she told him she wanted to be a detective. Despite her obvious skill, Barbara's small size depicted her as a joke to her jujitsu instructor and the FBI agent that interviewed her. Using her father's access codes, she broke into the JSA headquarters and left a note for her idol, Black Canary. Back home, she did some computer hacking to cover her tracks.

Chapter 2: Future Tense
The letter Barbara left for Black Canary was answered by Wildcat. He met her and turned her away. Her father worried that she didn't have enough of a social life and invited her to a costume party to benefit a police charity. She created her own Batman outfit to wear as a stab at her dad, who had been accused of associating with an urban legend. At the party, a man in a mask calling himself Killer Moth attempted to kidnap Bruce Wayne. Barbara - rather "Batgirl" - got Wayne out of harm's way and chased Killer Moth. Bruce suited up and joined his ward, Dick Grayson - Robin as Killer Moth eluded Batgirl.

Chapter 3: Afterglow
Batman and Robin caught up with Barbara. Robin rushed at her, but she skillfully evaded him. Killer Moth's fired upon them from his helicopter. She used the distraction to make her escape from the Dynamic Duo. She made it back home ahead of her father, who never knew she even attended the party. Killer Moth offered his services to "Tough" Tony Bressi's gang. They promptly tossed him to the curb. Batman and Robin met with Gordon - Batman assured him the girl wasn't part of their team. Batgirl made her second appearance by breaking up a robbery at a convenience store. Batman and Robin watched her from a rooftop.

Chapter 4: Cave Dwellers
As Batgirl swooped down from a rooftop, a batarang clipped her rope. Batman and Robin caught her, explaining that her rope would have cut her fingers off and left her a street pizza. She woke up in the Cave. Batman left her with Robin as he secretly watched from the manor above. Robin put her in a shooting range / gauntlet situation in their training area. She survived, but failed the test due to using deadly force. She awakened (out of costume) at her home. A packaged arrived for her - Robin sent her an assortment of rope, smoke pellets, and batarangs.

Chapter 5: Moth to a Flame
Killer Moth, still hell-bent on starting a protection racket, gathered some men and took them to his hideout. They walked out on him when they arrived - his place had been seized by the government for delinquent taxes. Nearby, at a movie set, a pyrotechnics "accident" under supervision of Garfield Lynns left the lead actress with burns on 80% of her body. Lynns was fired. He blew up the director's car and joined forces with Killer Moth as Firefly. They attacked Tony Bressi's strip club.

Chapter 6: Birds of Prey
Robin gave Batgirl a motorcycle. Bressi planned on getting Captain Gordon (who was making a name for himself by ratting out "made" cops) plus Killer Moth and Firefly. Batgirl heard over a police scanner that her father had been taken hostage by the bugs; Officer Jason Bard was injured in the attack. Black Canary arrived at the scene and teamed up with Batgirl thinking she was in with Batman and Robin. Firefly and Killer Moth arrived at Bressi's house with Gordon slightly before the real Killer Moth and Firefly arrived with Batgirl and Black Canary in check.

Chapter 7: Hearts Afire
The real Firefly began torching Bressi's place trying to get the imposters. As he and his partner attacked the fakers, Black Canary and Batgirl got Captain Gordon to safety. With Batman out of the country, Robin answered the signal. Gordon warned him to have Batgirl shut down. Barbara was visiting Officer Bard in the hospital when her father arrived. She slipped out and in to costume. Robin helped her out with a purse-snatcher and gave her a new motorcycle (she had to self-destruct hers after wrecking it chasing Firefly and Killer Moth). They answered the Batsignal.

Chapter 8: Seasoned Crime-Fighter
Robin took down Condiment King en route to their real target - a hostage situation on a subway train. On the way, he kissed Batgirl when she wasn't expecting it. They went after Mark Desmond - Blockbuster. Batgirl, refusing to take orders from the Boy Wonder was overmatched by Blockbuster atop the train. She was saved when he was knocked unconscious by a rail hitting him. When the train stopped, Desmond was taken in by the police, already tied up; Batgirl and Robin were nowhere in sight. Barbara returned home, her dad was called in to work headquarters - Firefly had torched it.

Chapter 9: Ashes and Blood
Batgirl attached herself to Killer Moth's helicopter as he and Firefly tried to escape from the fire. In flight, she affixed the copter to a structure using the ropes Robin had given her. As they crashed, Batgirl dropped and landed safely in a swimming pool. Batman and Robin took in Firefly and Killer Moth. Barbara found a note the next day from Batman - she met him that night and he took her to the cave. She passed his tests and sore an oath to Bruce (unmasked). Batman met Gordon on the rooftop of Police Headquarters, which was in the midst of being repaired from the fire damage. He introduced (a fake) Batgirl to Gordon as Barbara wandered up - much to the surprise of her father.
