Clark Kent prepared
to interview his childhood friend, Dr. Harrison Grey, at a gala to
dedicate his new plastic surgery center. Bruce Wayne prepared for
the same event, after being reminded of it by his butler, Alfred.
Kent and Wayne were introduced by their common friend. Dr. Grey
spoke of his center, which would focus on birth defects and
scarring - not cosmetic surgery, and retired. Backstage, he was
kidnapped. Superman and Batman both arrived on the scene quickly.
They disagreed on how to handle the situation and went their
separate ways. Eric Stag, a wannabe vigilante who preyed on
rapists, had captured the doctor in hopes of getting a new face.
Batman and Superman stopped him, but Dr. Grey was hit by a car and
killed trying to escape. |

On the first
anniversary of Dr. Harrison Grey's death, both Batman and Superman
visited his gravesite. Not understanding each other, they agreed
to work together that night - half in Gotham City, half in
Metropolis. In Gotham City, they took down a group of crooks who'd
worked for various other criminals calling themselves the
Henchmen. Batman and Superman discussed each other's methods and
the reasons both had not joined the JLA. In Metropolis, they
stopped a madman who had a device that could control metal (he
claimed to be from the future). They agreed to meet again on the
next anniversary of Dr. Grey's death. |

Batman headed to
Metropolis when he learned someone was hacking satellites to spy
on Superman. Superman was busy with an apartment building fire
when Batman arrived. Batman told him he'd found the location of
the trackers. It was learned that they were only piggy-backing on
the feeds. Batman went to find the real trackers and they turned
out to be a government agency planning to clone the Kryptonian. He
destroyed their data and warned them to shut down. |

Bat-Mite and Mr.
Mxyzptlk stopped time to decide who was better - Superman or
Batman. They put Lois Lane on a building being attacked by
Kryptonian birds. Superman and Batman (with help from Robin) got
to her at the same time. All four were placed in a booby trapped
funhouse. Robin suggested he team with Superman (and Lois with
Batman) so that neither imp would sabotage the contest. Mxyzptlk
gave Lois super powers, Bat-Mite gave Batman super powers. Each
time exited at the same time; the 5th dimension beings left. |

After the death of
Jason and the paralysis of Barbara, Superman visited Batman in the
cave. He confessed that he'd killed some of his enemies. When
Batman ordered him away, Superman grabbed him and flew him to
Smallville. He showed Batman what he fought for (instead of
Batman's fighting against things). He helped Bruce come to grips
with the loss of his partners. A doctor making a house call had a
heart attack. Batman resuscitated him while Superman delivered his
patent's baby. |

A breakout occurred
at both Stryker Island Prison in Metropolis and Arkham Asylum in
Gotham City. Batman and Superman met in Gotham (the Metropolis
criminals were hoping to take over GC, while the Gotham criminals
planned to keep them from it). They took down Bloodsport and
Deadshot; Batman called Oracle for reinforcements. Steel,
Supergirl, Superboy, Robin, Nightwing, and Azrael arrived quickly.
Azrael and Steel took down Metallo; Superboy and Robin caught
Poison Ivy; Nightwing and Superman got Charaxes and Hellgrammite;
Batman and Superman got the Riven Twins. Two-Face appeared with
the not-dead Dr. Harrison Grey. They took him down and rescued
their old friend. It appeared that Grey's body double had been
killed ten years before and he'd contracted amnesia due to the
occurrences. |
