| Storyline |
After a
month with no Batman, Bruce pondered his crusade - a child was
hospitalized in a coma as a result of one of his stings. He attended a
presentation where a man showed designs for a Neo-Gotham - a city where
everything was luminescent. While Batman pitied himself, Batgirl cleaned
up an apartment building bombing.
An eye-witness told the police that a glowing man set off the explosion at
the abandoned apartment building. A museum curator gave a local artist a
tour of an old Batman exhibit so he could do a portrait of the crime
fighter. She turned on the signal. Batgirl watched Batman arrive and
realized the anger he was experiencing. He told her she didn't exist
without him and that he didn't exist anymore. She witnessed another
bombing - this one at a Wayne-owned building.
When Bruce heard of the Wayne Tower bombing, Batman went out. Near the
site, Batgirl found the word "purge" written in glowing paint.
Batman visited the artist who wanted to do his portrait and posed for him.
Cassandra struggled with the demons of her past and her personal life.
Evan Slate, the designer of Neo-Gotham, returned to his office to find his
assistant had been attacked. He blamed Batman. The boy Batman failed to
save died in the hospital.
As Slate vowed vengeance against Batman and the darkness of Gotham City,
Batman took down a mugger then returned to the painter. Batgirl was
injured in Purge's next strike; Batman arrived and found her unconscious
at the scene. Oracle got some information on the death of Slate's partner
- she'd been poisoned. Batman got Batgirl to the cave so Alfred could
attend her. Batman was gone when she recovered - she got the message from
Oracle and went after Slate.
As Batman posed again, Purged attacked. He took down Batman and stole
Rahn's painting of him. The building was blown up; Rahn was the only one
missing. Batgirl informed the police that she believed Slate was Purge.
Montoya and Allen got into Slate's tower with the help of his girlfriend (Rahn's
agent). Batgirl got to Purge, who was with Slate and his prisoner, Rahn.
Purge blew up Slate's building and they escaped with Rahn. Batgirl
pursued. As the building separated Montoya and Allen, Batman arrived to
help Batgirl. He asked her forgiveness.
Batgirl saved Montoya; Batman saved Allen. The police surrounded the
building. Purge boarded one of their helicopters and crashed it into
another. The batsignal was ordered on. After seeing it, Slate was enraged.
His tower (which has his DNA in the phosphorescence) began spewing itself
onto others.
Slate's tower continued to envelope everything around it. Purge seemed to
be one with it. Batman got to Slate. He temporarily escaped, but his inner
beast turned on him. Batman saved him and delivered him to Arkham Asylum.
Angela and Rahn were freed; Slate's buildings lost their shine. |
