After taking down
one of Joe the Undertaker's henchmen, Batman encountered a man who
appeared to have some sort of plant growing from his mouth. A
woman clad in leaves watched him from a rooftop. As Batman neared,
she kissed a man, causing him to leap from the building. Batman
saved him, but the woman escaped. An episode with two men working
for her caused Poison Ivy to remember other men who'd wronged her.
She thought Batman would be different. She used her plants to kill
the two men.
Bruce attended a charity function the next night. He was
introduced to a botanist, Pamela Isley. During a speech, everyone
but him began sprouting mushrooms (he'd stayed away from the
champagne). Isley attacked Lt. Gordon, who was there as security.
As Poison Ivy, she offered a cure to anyone who was willing to pay
for it. Seeing Bruce being a bit heroic, Ivy gave him a special
dose by kiss. Batman went after her - without an antidote, he'd be
dead by the end of the night. He got to her. After he asked for
the antidote for Bruce Wayne, she kissed him - the only cure was a
second kiss from her. Realizing he was going to make it, he took
her down and delivered her to Arkham Asylum. |

Edward Nigma had a
rough childhood. His parents fought and didn't look after him. No
one noticed him in school. After winning a contest (by cheating),
he became obsessed with puzzles. After graduation, he got a job.
He got a boring job. He began stealing things, but got bored with
that. Finally, he began leaving clues in the form of riddles at
his crime scenes. After a few scores, he encountered Batman. By
stroke of luck, he escaped. Wanting to be more than just a nut
job, he decided to pull off a huge caper under the noses of both
Lt. Gordon and Batman. With them watching at another benefit,
Riddler, Echo, and Query ripped off an underground vault below the
building. Though Batman got to them, they got away with over
$2million. Batman stuck it to him on his next caper and finally
took him down.
After telling his story in Arkham, Nigma realized no one was there
to listen. |

Jonathan Crane was
ridiculed as a kid. His gangly physique led others to dub him
'scarecrow.' He resorted to being a loner, immersing himself in
books. After being jilted by the girl he had a crush on, Crane
attacked her and her boyfriend after the prom. Garbed as a
scarecrow, he threw fireworks at their car, causing them to crash.
She was killed; her boyfriend was left paralyzed. While in
college, Crane became fixated on one of his professors. With no
openings on the staff, Crane created a chemical that caused the
professor to become deathly afraid. He leapt from the building,
leaving an opening for Crane. He was dismissed from the staff
after firing a gun in class.
Captain Gordon signaled Batman - five Gotham University
administrators were dead of cardiac arrest. During his
investigation, Batman learned that a GU professor fell to his
death a year earlier and was replaced by Jonathan Crane. Crane had
been fired the week before. Batman broke into Crane's nearby
apartment. Inside, he found only a scarecrow. He checked it out
and was sprayed with gas. As he cowered in fear, he heard the
ticking of a bomb and barely escaped through the window. He spoke
with Gordon again and set a trap for Crane. They fought, but
Batman was victorious. Scarecrow was admitted to Arkham Asylum. |

Dr. Kirk Langstrom
continued to immerse himself into his study of bats, so much so
that he began ignoring his fiancé. The university denied him any
further funding. He performed the experiment on himself; the
result was a regaining of his sense of hearing. His hearing
continued to become more and more acute; he began transforming
into a giant bat.
While Batman chased a group of bandits out to steal the first
print of a movie, he encountered what he believed was a man in a
flying bat suit. Later, the creature Langstrom had become found
Batman's cave. Batman was able to tranquilize it. Fingerprints
still intact, he learned the man's identity and returned him to
his fiancé. She got what she hoped was the antidote from a
colleague and was able to inject it in him. Soon, he was again
Kirk Langstrom and they were married. Dr. Langstrom had no memory
of his nine month ordeal. |
