storyline Bruce told Tim about Jean-Paul Valley. He got JPV a job at WayneTech as a security guard. He asked Robin to show him around while he got some rest. Their first night out together was a success - Robin and JPV stopped some industrial thieves from stealing top secret plans from WayneTech. Bruce contacted Shondra Kinsolving, Jack Drake's doctor.

storyline Killer Croc resurfaced. Bruce had his first appointment with Dr. Kinsolving. She gave him some sedatives and had him get some rest. Realizing the effects it might have for Batman not to go after Croc (who was on a rampage), Tim gave Jean-Paul a Batsuit. They went out after Croc. Together, they were unable to take him down, but Bane showed up and easily defeated him. He knew JPV wasn't Batman.

storyline Batman went to answer Gordon's signal and came across Batman (JPV) and Robin. He thanked Jean-Paul for helping out, and let it be known he was back. Gordon showed them the riddle he'd received. Bane got the riddle first and attacked Riddler. He doped him up with Venom. Batman showed up and was not prepared for the pumped up version of the Riddler. He was able to stop the bomb, but Riddler escaped. He analyzed some of the projectiles and found it to be Venom. The next riddle was much simpler. Batman went after him, but Bane's thugs shot Riddler up before much of a fight. Bane received blueprints of Arkham Asylum.

storyline Bane and his team raided an armory and stocked up on weapons. They began their assault on Arkham Asylum. Joker was the first to be freed, he took Jeremiah Arkham hostage after letting loose the other inmates. A helicopter dropped crates of guns for the escapees. Bane watched as Batman arrived. On his way there, he ordered Tim and Jean Paul to stay out of the situation. Bane's group opened fire on the approaching police.

storyline Mad Hatter broke a chimp free from a zoo and robbed a hat store. He left Batman an invitation to a tea party there. His group (who he controlled through their head pieces) began following his orders - Film Freak went to find and kill whomever let them out. As he neared, Bane killed Film Freak. Batman and Robin took down the tea party and Jervis Tetch.

Zsasz had 15 girls hostage and killed the first two policemen who tried to go in after him. Batman and Robin went in as Bane his crew watched the reports on TV. Batman, with help of Officer Montoya, captured Zsasz before he could kill any more. Bird reported to Bane - Batman appeared physically exhausted.

Robin escaped the sewer and returned to the cave. Cornellius Stirk and Joker went after Commissioner Gordon. Batman arrived at stopped Stirk from killing him. Joker and Scarecrow teamed up after Stirk's failure. They attacked the mayor.

Batman was unable to catch Firefly. Azrael went out alone. Bruce Wayne attended a Wayne Foundation dinner with Dr. Shondra Kinsolving. Bane was outside watching and immediately knew that Wayne was the Batman. Poison Ivy struck at the dinner. She carted off all the males (including a faking Wayne). When Batman was necessary, he appeared and took down Ivy. Joker and Scarecrow lured police into a funhouse and detonated it, killing twenty.

To lure Batman, Joker and Scarecrow took the mayor into a passage tunnel beneath the Gotham River. They set off explosions on each end. Batman went in after them. He attacked Scarecrow, then the Joker, but was hit with fear gas. Scarecrow breached the tunnel with a rocket launcher. As the river began entering the tunnel, Batman went for the mayor.

Batman confronted Bane. Bane beat him like a rag-doll - throwing him, crashing him through walls. The beating continued down the stairs and into the cave below Wayne Manor. When Batman refused to beg for mercy, Bane lifted him up and crashed him down across his knee. Alfred went to get Tim.

With Batman down, Bane began attacking and absorbing gangs across Gotham City. Dr. Kinsolving was asked to be Bruce Wayne's personal doctor for the immediate future while he recovered from his "car accident." Bane's crew caught Catwoman; she was asked to pay Bane tribute. With Bruce's blessing, Tim asked Jean Paul to fill in as Batman.

Bruce and Alfred readied for a trip to Santa Prisca to rescue Dr. Kinsolving and Jack Drake. Batman returned to the cave; Bruce asked him to keep it up while they were gone. Selina Kyle stowed away on the Wayne jet to Santa Prisca. Batman and Robin took down Bane's men and saved some kidnapped children. Tim realized his father was missing.

Batman survived the fall from a building and Bane escaped. Back in the cave, Tim and Jean Paul talked. Batman no longer needed Robin. Jean Paul continued designing his new costume. Nightwing came to Gotham, where he learned the details from Robin. He was upset that Bruce didn't come to him. Jean Paul went out in his new costume, more Azrael than Batman. Bane put forth a challenge, Az-Bat accepted. On orders from the mayor, the police stood down as they fought. Az-Bat took out Bane's supply of venom, leaving him a normal human. Bane fled. They met up again and continued their fight on an elevated train. Robin showed up and freed the passenger cars from the lead car. Az-Bat defeated Bane and left him for the police.

storyline Az-Bat received a vision from St. Dumas, commanding him to follow his crusade as a dark angel. He broke up a mob meeting and ordered one of the Dons to report to him. Gordon confronted Batman on his methods and realized he was a different man. The Dons got together and hired a former government agent-turned hitman named Mekros to take out Batman.
