Perry,
Lois, and Clark all congratulated Jimmy on a front page
story with pictures - Superman KOs Super-Menace. After
the group left White's office, he noticed a story on
Lex Luthor and thought back to when they were friends:
He'd returned from some two years in the Southeast Asian
jungle to find no one waiting for him at the airport.
As soon as he grabbed a cab, one of Luthor's men called
in the report. Luthor told Alice that Perry was back
in town. She got upset with Lex and stormed out. She
headed straight to Perry's apartment. They embraced
and headed inside.
At dinner, she told him Lex planned to sell the Daily
Planet. White was livid and they went to meet with him.
Lex offered him a job at a TV station he'd started,
but Perry wouldn't have it. Luthor also made sure to
discreetly let him know that he and Alice had become
"friends" in his absence.
Perry got one of his friends, Ling, to buy the paper
and he was made editor. He and Alice made up and it
was later discovered that she was pregnant.
Perry woke up form his daydream and took his wife and
son to lunch. |

Lucy
Lane's apartment caught fire. Her sister, Lois, saved
her dog from it and was then saved by Superman. Lois
invited her sister to move in with her until she got
things back in order. Lois thought back on the day she
and Lucy visited the Daily Planet offices. She asked
Perry White for a job, saying she was nineteen. Her
sister corrected her: 15. On their way out, they overheard
some of Luthor's goons talking about something big.
That night, Lois snuck off the base and headed into
Metropolis. She snuck into Luthor's office to look for
details, but got caught. She was set free after being
searched, but was able to stuff something in her mouth
and deliver it to White the next day. He hired her. |

Superman
stopped three crooks who were trying to tunnel into
a bank with a laser drill stolen from Lexcorp. After
handing them off to the police, he thought back on his
arrival in Metropolis.
After checking into a hotel for his first night there,
he flew up to get a good look at the city. He saw police
being fired upon nearby. Still in plain clothes, he
went into action. He took care of the crooks and headed
to his appointment with Metropolis University. Smallville
High wasn't accredited, so he had to test in order to
apply.
Afterwards, he got a job at a nearby restaurant as a
dish washer, then cook. Clark saved Lois Lane from a
car chase (without anyone knowing it) and got the notion
to work for the Daily Planet so he could be close to
the action and breaking stories.
He passed the MU entrance exam, though he was late arriving
(due to saving Lois). Two years later, he quit his job
at the restaurant.
Superman decided it was time to pay a visit to Ruby,
a woman he'd worked with there. He changed clothes and
searched her out. |

Superman
saved Jimmy Olsen (who called with his signal watch)
from a sinking ocean liner. Jimmy told Superman how
he was undercover as "Bart James" trying to
take down Fat Eddie Cortes' cocaine business. Cortes
had apparently gotten wise to him and attempted to sink
him with an old ship.
Jimmy thought back on when he'd first gotten the watch:
four years previous, he was working at the Planet on
Saturday afternoons (for no pay). His mom was against
it, so he had to sneak out. On his way, he bumped into
his friend Chrissie, who was going through some trouble
at home. After work he went home and was caught by his
mom. She called Perry White.
Chrissie hauled herself into his room - she'd taken
some of her mom's pills. Their phone broke, so Jimmy
rigged a ultrasonic device in hopes of flagging Superman.
It worked, and Superman got her safely to a hospital.

| Notes,
references to time, and chronology: |
|
This
takes place mostly during flashbacks. |
| |
Clark,
issue 3 (in flashback): "In the months since I left Smallville,
I've been all over the world, but Metropolis still blows me
away." |
| |
Issue
3 has an ads for Cosmic Odyssey,
the Deadshot mini, Who
is Donna Troy, and A
Death in the Family, so this takes place prior. |
| |
Issue
3 during flashback: "...if I've learned anything in five
years at the Daily Planet it's that Perry White is a demon for
deadlines." (Lois Lane) |
| |
Jimmy
Olsen is 18 at the time of issue 4: "It was about four
years ago now ... Ask any fourteen year old." At this time,
Kent had been with the Planet 1 year: "This is your anniversary,
isn't it? One year today you've been with the paper." |
| |
The
flashbacks here do a nice job of filling in some gaps between
the original Man of Steel
mini and the following volumes of Superman collections. |
