Nightwing
witnessed a child abduction and went into action.
After catching up with the kidnapper, he slit his
throat.
Elsewhere in NYC, Dick Grayson woke up with a new
bed partner and introduced himself. As he left her
("Cheyenne") apartment, another man entered.
The man (Ron) turned violent; Cheyenne hit back with
what appeared to be some sort of electricity.
The Pierce Brothers, who'd set up the kidnapping,
read about it in the morning paper. Dick saw the headline,
too, and bumped into Clancy, a woman he'd known in
Bludhaven. She'd seen him the night before with Ms.
Freemont (who turned out to be a fashion designer).
She gave him her card and told him they should get
together (she was now a psychiatrist). Dick soon found
himself a loft apartment and began moving in. That
night, he got into costume and saved Clancy from one
of her estranged patients. She offered to see him
professionally.
Nightwing swooped in on the Pierce Brothers, who were
roughing up one of their lendees who was late with
his payment. One gave Nightwing first punch, and took
it with ease. Nightwing stammered when he realized
Pierce was a metahuman. Pierce dropped him off the
rooftop, but Nightwing was saved by the other Nightwing.

The
Pierce brothers watched the two Nightwings and began
firing. Dick realized the other was Jason Todd. They
got out of the bullets and had it out. Jason continuously
called Dick "partner" and questioned where
he'd been for the last year. Dick suffered a cut hand
and Jason got away.
While nursing his hand, Dick thought about his career
as Nightwing, about the year away, about being out
of shape, and about Jason dying. He later found out
Cheyenne was also dating one of the Pierce brothers.
He went to her office in hopes of talking to her,
but was mistaken for a model and hired. They all thought
his bruises were great for a rugged shoot. He later
visited her office - she was making designs based
on Nightwing's costume.
Later, Dick got back into costume and did some snooping
on the Pierces. He spotted Jason roughing someone
up. Jason vanished; Dick was seen with his victim.
Jason made a move on Cheyenne.

A
Pierce Bros. truck was being hijacked when a gun fight
broke out. Jason-as-Nightwing joined the fight and
killed two (one execution style gun to the head, the
other with a knife to the throat). The real Nightwing
arrived and began to take on his imitator. The Pierce
brothers got video of the altercation and watched
it with a survivor. They had a new associate present,
who said the survivor was lying about the situation.
"Jakob" explained to them that the fake
Nightwing appeared to be fixated on the real one.
He believed the "genuine article might be deliberately
holding back" and the two were probably acquainted.Jakob
was hired to catch the fake, which he believed would
bring out the real one. He then killed the survivor
of the hijack attempt.
Nightwing (Dick) visited with Clancy about the impostor
situation.
The newspapers ran stories on the dual Nightwings.
Cheyenne changed her new show to feature superhero
attire. Dick modeled the Nightwing-styled outfit.
Cheyenne brought Jason as a date to the show; Dick
- in the Nightwing costume - leapt off the stage and
attacked him. The audience believed the fight to be
part of the show.
Dick quit; Cheyenne went to visit him after tracking
down his address. She used her powers to break through
the lock and saw Nightwing leaving through the window.
She overheard Jason leaving him a message about where
they would be meeting later that night. Cheyenne showed
up and messed up their sting. She told Dick he could
trust her after using her powers to stop the robbery.
Jason was captured by Jakob, who turned into a giant
creature of some sorts. He was also a mind reader.

Jakob
headed back to the Pierce Brothers and upchucked Jason.
He told them Mr. Todd had 24 hours before the cocoon
he was in hardened and his oxygen was depleted. They
placed him with their other "trophies."
Dick offered to help Cheyenne with her powers, but
she refused. Her parents had also been meta. She got
very defensive and lashed out at him - so much so
that they caused structural damage to his apartment.
After she left, Dick found Jason's picture both on
his milk carton and on a "missing" poster
across the street. As Nightwing, he visited Dr. Clancy.
He didn't know if he wanted to save his estranged
"brother."
Dick took the bait and went after the Pierces. He
gave a heads-up to Cheyenne. She decided to face her
fears and met him in a Nightwing costume of her own.
They both attacked Jakob, who turned into his monster
form. He ate Ms. Nightwing. She used her powers and
exploded him from the inside. When she got out, the
Pierce Bros. were there.

The
Nightwings attacked the Pierces both physically and
emotionally, using penis size jokes to get under their
skin. Barry eventually got so enraged that he swung
at Cheyenne, missed, and ruptured Jason's casing.
Nightwing formulated a plan: let them beat on him
until they got tired. After one was down, the other
was attacked by ... Jason, who'd taken on Jakob's
powers and turned into a cockroach monster. He ate
them and spit them back up.
Nightwing and Ms. Nightwing ran, as one of the Pierce
brothers began to expand. He convinced a cop to evacuate
the immediate area while he and Cheyenne disappeared
into a manhole. The second Pierce eventually exploded
(one brother could contract his molecules, the other
could expand them).
The next day, Cheyenne came in with a telegram for
Dick from Jason: the cockroach transformation was
only temporary and he was back to normal. He'd left
"town to find his own way."

Cheyenne,
who was losing cash now that the Pierce Bros had dropped
their investment in her, smelled something funny at
the office. The sprinklers went off. Nightwing saw
the fire and realized it was her studio. He saved
her, but the police caught up to him and opened fire.
The next day, she showed up at Dick's place in a Superman
t-shirt. With her studio destroyed and her apartment's
lease revoked (again, thanks to the Pierce Bros),
she decided to move in with him temporarily.
Fireball, the arsonist who set the fire, called Barry
Pierce looking for his payment.
Nightwing visited Clancy again and told about Cheyenne
moving in (he did not tell her name). He told her
he didn't love Cheyenne and that he and his only real
love had outgrown each other. He also mentioned that
he'd been reevaluating himself since almost dying
in the Crisis.
Fireball set fire to Buddy Pierce when he didn't pay.
Nightwing came to the rescue, but so did the police.
He was surrounded again.

Arsenal
showed up and saved Nightwing from the police. After
escaping, Roy said he was worrying about him - he
thought it might be time for the former Boy Wonder
to make a change.
Cheyenne agreed he needed a change.
Fireball and his sidekick, Sparkplug, eyed the Pierce
brothers. The little girl took Barry a note supposedly
from Cheyenne. She also took Cheyenne a note supposedly
from Barry. They met; Fireball and Sparkplug attacked.
Nightwing came home to find a note from Cheyenne.
He rescued her and took down the bad guys.
Back at his apartment, Cheyenne packed her bags -
she'd gotten a job designing costumes for a movie.
She also said she'd lost her powers while fighting
Sparkplug.

Of note:
the solicitation for this tpb is listed as including 118-122.
I'm placing 123-124 here also - they continue the Pierce Brothers
story and are by the same writer. |

This
appears to be set before the Outsiders OYL arc, as Jason mentions
them being dead ("'Outsiders,' nice working keeping them
alive.") in issue 120. |

Apologies
in advance for my editorial here, but this is quite possibly
the worst 7 issues of a continuing comic I've ever read.
Supposedly, Dick, Bruce, and Tim were away during the missing
"52" year training together. Dick is portrayed her
as an amateur at best. Also, the last thing we saw in the
Nightwing title was Dick proposing to Barbara Gordon. Here,
the first time we see him, he's waking up with a woman he
doesn't know. Also, a man who'd worked with (and had been
trained by) the Batman exclusively for years, a man who'd
led teams against demons, intergalactic threats, and other
super-beings would not stutter when coming face-to-face with
a metahuman. A leader with his stature would had a contingency
plan and would have used his detective skills to realize anyone
who would give a known "superhero" first punch was
more than he appeared to be.
Later, while talking to Clancy, Nightwing gave up his imitator's
name (Jason Todd) which could very easily lead her to him
being Dick Grayson and even Batman being Bruce Wayne.
Dick took a long time getting over the situation where he
didn't stop Tarantula from killing Blockbuster. Here, he more
or less let Cheyenne kill Jakob the cockroach without a second
thought. |
