Storyline

John Stewart, at his wife's grave, commanded his ring to go out and find Hal Jordan. He realized her death was not Jordan's fault.
Hal returned to Washington DC when the senate hearings on the Green Lantern were to be held. John, having given up his secret identity, had been arrested. He was receiving blame for many things Jordan had done. Stewart was imprisoned in a foreign land for a crime he did not commit. Hal couldn't do anything via the legal system to help him out, so he donned his ring and headed to Oa for advice. The Guardians no longer ruled the Lanterns, and only one remained on Oa. He refused to give Jordan advice, but he did give him Stewart's ring to do with what he pleased.
He took the ring to John, who refused it. Jordan left the decision him. Later, while taking a severe beating, John called the ring to him and demolished the jail.
Stewart saw apartheid firsthand and vowed to help end it. One of the men he set free while escaping was blamed for the murder of a white couple. Superman demanded Jordan "shut down" Stewart.
Stewart and his friends staged a demonstration at a South Nambian festival, only to be opposed by Jordan. While they fought, John's "friends" detonated explosives and opened fire on officials.
After everyone's eyes were opened, John tried to give his ring back to Hal, but his friend refused. John decided to go into space for a while to get his head straight.
