In
Manhattan Beach, the Manhunters met with their grandmaster.
They'd infiltrated every aspect of life as normal citizens.
Hal Jordan's friend Tom Kalmaku was caught spying on
their meeting. He was beaten and left to die on an airport
landing strip. Tom was able to get out of the way of
a landing jet.
Some of the Green Lanterns were keeping Kilowog company
when a Guardian (Herupa Hando Hu) showed up with a Zamaron,
Nadia Safir. Herupa told them of the Manhunters.
Harbinger completed some of her historical studies.
The JLI (Justice League International) was called to
the GL Citadel. Hal Jordan and his colleagues welcomed
them. The Outsiders and Infinity, Inc. arrived soon
thereafter. As they all mingled, some of the group noticed
strange things about a few of the members. The immortal
visitors spoke: the next race of immortals would be
born on Earth. They asked Earth's superheroes to protect
the chosen ones from the Manhunters.
The Manhunters were created by the Guardians 3.5 million
years before. These androids were their first attempt
at universal peacekeepers. The Manhunters turned on
their masters. The Guardians realized their failure
and looked to living beings to be their peacekeepers.
The Green Lantern Corps was created.
The Teen Titans were not invited because one of their
ten chosen was one of them: Terra. Geo-Force spoke up
that his sister was dead. Herupa said he and his companion
must regroup. Superman convinced the rest to join up
on this mission. |

At
the Daily Planet, Lana Lang revealed to Clark Kent that
she was a Manhunter.
With one of their chosen dead (Terra) and another senile
(Raoul), Herupa Hando Hu and Nadia Safir visited their
third, an aborigine in Australia named Betty Clawman.
The next, a Japanese man named Takeo Yakata, was not
as open to them as was Clawman.
Batman met with Commissioner Gordon, who told him a
"Harbinger" was rumored to be the one who'd
given secrets to the Manhunters. He then knocked Batman
from his window - Gordon was a Manhunter.
Harbinger appeared before the two immortals. She told
them she had the ability to split herself into several
consciousness and offered to aide them as she did the
Monitor during the Crisis. They were aware that her
document hand inadvertently landed in the hands of the
Manhunters. After hearing this, Harbinger flew away
hoping to find a way to rectify her mistake. Heru and
Nadia found their next chosen one, a Chinese woman named
Xiang Po. Next was a Russian man named Nikolai Latikov.
Blue Beetle, after confronting a man who was attempting
to blackmail him, ran into Overthrow.
Heru and Nadia contacted more of their chosen ones,
a British woman named Celia Windward; an Iranian named
Salima Baranizar; a South African man named Janwillem
Kroef; a Peruvian named Gregorio de la Vega. After,
they returned to the Green Lanterns of Earth, who were
visiting with a recovering Tom Kalmaku - their ninth
choice. |

Inc. captured the Floronic Man and brought him to the
Green Lantern base; Firestorm and Booster Gold were
now on the side of the Manhunters.
Batman found a Manhunter base in Louisiana (where Floronic
Man was captured) and headed there. The government sent
Captain Atom to Louisiana to capture Firestorm.
The immortals spoke with their eight remaining chosen
ones (including Jason Woodrue - Floronic Man), giving
them one more opportunity to opt out of their commitment.
All stayed on.
The Suicide Squad got their marching orders, also to
attack the reported Manhunter base in Louisiana Batman
visited looking for Mark Shaw - a former Manhunter -
but he was told Shaw had been released (he was actually
on the Suicide Squad mission).
A man attacked Madame Xanadu and took from her a Manhunter

After
the Manhunter Highmaster was defeated, Dr. Fate admitted
to the space-bound team that he could not get them home.
He was new (not the original Dr. Fate) and did not yet
have the knowledge or power.
The deep sea team reached their destination. They found
an underground fortress and overheard the Manhunters'
plan: if they were defeated, they would destroy the
Earth. The team took out the Manhunters, and during
the fight, Booster Gold switched sides again. The heroes
refused to believe him when he tried to explain that
he'd done everything to infiltrate the Manhunters.
At once, both the space-bound team and the deep sea
team were summoned by the immortals (who were now aging
rapidly). Their chosen were but one step away from inheriting
their roles. |
