Barbara
Gordon's application to the police academy was denied.
Her father, on his way to becoming commissioner, tried
to persuade her away from cop life. He thought a college
graduate should do something else. She held a job as
a librarian and took jujitsu. She applied for FBI, but
was sent away because she was too young and too short.
She broke into JSA headquarters and left a note for
Black Canary. |

Barbara's
letter never got to Black Canary - she was met by Wild
Cat and turned away. She moped until her father invited
her to a masquerade. She decided to go as his unofficial
friend, the Batman. She was unable to find a suitable
costume, so she made her own. Killer Moth attacked the
party attempting to kidnap Bruce Wayne. Barbara - as
Batman - went after him. Dick saw something about it
on the news and suited up and met Bruce, who was also
in costume. Killer Moth escaped in a helicopter leaving
Barbara face-to-face with Batman and Robin. |

Robin
attempted to apprehend "Batgirl," but she
gave him the slip when Killer Moth began firing at them
from the helicopter. She escaped and made it home. Officer
Jason Bard came by to check on her, but she slammed
the door in his face. The next morning, her father told
her what had gone down at the party (she said she'd
taken some cold medicine and crashed for the night).
Killer Moth offered his protection services to Tough
Tony Bressi. Bressi laughed in his face. Gordon met
with Batman and Robin about Killer Moth; Batman assured
him they had nothing to do with the girl. In the meantime,
Batgirl took down some hoods trying to rip off a convenience
store. Feeling high from the victory, Barbara put some
money into her new career. She got better boots, more
equipment, and a belt to stick it all in.
Batman and Robin watched as she prepared to jump from
Wayne Tower. |

Batman
cut Batgirl's line after she jumped. He and Robin saved
her, explaining that the rope she used had no give.
He sprayed her with a knock-out gas and took her to
the cave. When she woke up, Batman informed them he
was going back out. From the manor above, he watched
Robin and Batgirl via closed-circuit tv. His partner
put the girl through some tests. Batman came down and
told her she failed - she'd resorted to deadly force
against an adversary.
She was gassed again and woke up outside her home. Batman
and Robin knew who she was. The next day a package arrived
- Robin had sent her batarangs, ropes, and grapples.

the underworld. He took his goons to his hideout, but
it had been locked up due to delinquent taxes.
Garfield Lynns, a Holywood pyrotechnics expert, was
fired while on location in Gotham City for blowing up
the lead actress. She had burns on 80% of her body.
He killed the director and joined Killer Moth as FireFly. |

Captain
Jim Gordon was kidnapped by "Tough" Tony Bressi's
men - Killer Moth and Firefly. Officer Jason Bard was
injured in the attack. Batgirl and Black Canary, who
was there because the bombed place was her late father's,
went after them on her newly acquired Batcycle, given
to her by Robin (and by Batman in secret). While chasing
the two costumed freaks, they were captured by them
- though not the same ones. Moth and Firefly arrived
at Bressi's place flanked by another Killer Moth and
Firefly, who had the girls captive. |

When
the two sets of Killer Moths and Fireflys broke into
a fight, Canary and Batgirl got Bressi and Gordon to
safety outside. The house was lit up. Robin answered
Gordon's signal (Batman was in Tibet with Deadman).
The Boy Wonder was told to get Batgirl off the streets
before the police did it.
Barbara went to thank Jason Bard for what he did to
help her father. He told her he was going to have to
be off the force on disability. As they began to get
a bit more friendly, Captain Gordon came in and interrupted
them. After being assisted by Robin on a purse-snatching,
Batgirl got another Batcycle - this one with her logo
on it - and the two junior vigilantes teamed up to answer
the signal. |

On
their way to the real hostage situation, they took down
a man squirting people with mustard and calling himself
Condiment King. Robin snuck a kiss as they rode. In
the subway, they caught up with the main attraction
- Mark Desmond, aka Blockbuster. Disobeying Robin's
orders, Batgirl went after him directly. As he was about
to crush her skull atop the subway car, he got his head
bashed by an overhang. The vigilantes were gone by the
time the police came in and tranquilized him. Gordon
saw some strands of long red hair in one of the man's
hands.
Barbara returned home to find her father in her room
demanding to talk. Before he could get anything out,
he was called back to police headquarters - up in flames.
Barbara followed him, angry that he'd gone through her
stuff (though she didn't believe he'd found anything).

Barbara
pulled her hood and cape on and went after the bugs.
As she got to them, they took off in the mothcopter.
She got a jumpline onto it and hitched a ride with
them. They quickly noticed and began manuvering to
get her off. She attached the other end of her jumpline
to a fixture and caused them to crash. Batman and
Robin were nearby in their own helicopter; they got
the collars while Batgirl fell safely into a swimming
pool.
Batman left a note for Barbara. She met him that night
and was taken to the cave for a second time. She swore
an oath to him and he removed his cowl for her. Batman
introduced another new partner to Gordon, while Barbara
watched them (Dick was disguised as Batgirl so he
could see his daughter and her at the same time).
Jason Bard opened up a PI business; Barbara contemplated
running for office. |
