Batman
checked out the security before attending a function
as Bruce Wayne. Senator Evan Gregory was a man running
for governor - Batman wanted to make sure he lived
to see election day. Gregory wanted to make the Batman
more "legitimate." While speaking, Gregory
introduced his fiancee - Silver St. Cloud. After an
awkward moment, Silver introduced Bruce to Evan.
The Joker appeared and made his bid for governor -
"vote for me, or I'll kill you." He shook
hands with Gregory and almost killed him with a rigged
joy buzzer. Joker then demanded $1 million from everyone
in attendance. Batman was quick to the punch, but
Joker escaped cleanly. A police officer was found
dead outside. |

Joker
found Two-Face waiting for him at his hideout. The
former District Attorney warned him not to run for
governor.
After seeing Evan off to one of his events, Silver
visited Wayne Manor. After they agreed on friendship,
Bruce insisted on showing her the cave beneath the
house. While inside, he believed Joe Chill and several
of his enemies were in the cave, then realized he'd
been attacked by the Scarecrow (possibly as a policeman
the night before - time released fear gas). When he'd
overcome it, he and Silver admitted their love for
each other. They gave into their passion as the Joker
killed the first victim who didn't pay his demands.
Commissioner Akin wondered about Batman. |

The
next morning, Silver and Bruce discussed what their
feelings and what they'd done.
As Batman sought out Scarecrow, he happened upon Two-Face
going after the gate of a baseball double-header.
Dent got away, but Batman was able to nab one of his
henchmen.
Two-Face visited a scientists known as Double X and
made the final payment on a clone of himself - one
with none of the scarring; one that would follow his
every order. Batman somehow found them. Two-Face and
Harvey bested Batman for a second time that night
and escaped. As they entered their hideout, a bomb
went off. Harvey's face was scarred on one side, and
hit with Joker poison on the other. Two-Face was devastated.
Bruce returned home and had his wounds tended by Silver.

Batman awakened, hooked to his own devices in order
to break the Scarecrow's hold over him.
Silver told Evan about Bruce. She told him she'd stay
by his side until the election was over, but her heart
was not in it. When he was called back to the stage
for an encore of his speech, Joker snatched her. |

Silver
St. Cloud woke up in Joker's presence.
Batman tracked Scarecrow from the chemicals used in
his newest gas. Crane was easily defeated. When Bruce
returned home, Evan Gregory showed up with the Joker's
note. Batman began relentlessly searching for Joker.
The police cornered him, but he escaped. He went to
Two-Face, who refused to give up Joker's location
- he wanted to get even with him for killing the clone.
A second clone appeared - one made from only Harvey's
bad side. It told Batman where to find Joker.
Joker began to torture her when she mentioned Batman. |

| storyline |
Batman
entered the location given to him by the Two-Face
clone. He found Gregory and his bodyguards - Gregory
was injured and the others were dead. The house was
completely boobie-trapped and obviously the right
location. Batman got Evan to a safe spot and ordered
him to stay. He got to the Joker and freed Silver.
With the villain unconscious, Batman and Silver embraced
- only to be interrupted by Evan's screams. They found
him missing an arm and a leg. Batman told Silver that
Gregory needed her now more than he did. She blasted
him for not knowing what "love" was. Joker
wandered through on fire. Batman got Gregory and Silver
out of the house as it went up in flames. Gregory
was handed over to medical staff and Batman disappeared.

| Notes,
references to time, and chronology: |
|
No
real time frame is given for this title, only the following
as hints:
- Batman
is wanted by the police.
- No
Robin is present.
- Catwoman
is mentioned as a villain, so it's before her "death"
and return.
- One
of the fears Batman fought was seeing Joe Chill in the
cave. This could be the effects of the fear gas, but it
could also place this title before Zero Hour, when Batman
learned Chill was not the murderer of his parents.
- Though
never called by name, it is possible one of the police
higher-ups is Commissioner (to-be?) Akin.
|
| |
For now,
this will be placed during the time Tim Drake trains to become
the third Robin. Bruce's attitude fits well with this time.
