Bruce
woke up from a dream which had been plaguing him for
a month - his witnessed his parents murdered by the
Batman. He got into costume and answered the signal.
Gordon showed him a body which had been completely pulverized,
though there were no marks on it.
A woman named Jeannie Bowen arrived in Gotham City looking
for her long-lost brother. She visited WayneTech, but
was turned away - no Roy Kane had ever worked there.
While watching a drug deal, Batman witnessed the spectacular:
a man calling himself the Bonecrusher used sonic waves
to destroy a barge. He gave chase, only to have the
villain commit suicide.
Three homeless men discussed having similar dreams -
one dreamed he was on a pier fighting Batman.
Bruce met Jeannie and took her through WayneTech to
see if anyone remembered her brother - if he'd worked
there, it had been at least six months previous. Together,
they found eight people who remembered him - all said
he just stopped showing up for work. That night, Bruce
cut short his date with Jeannie after seeing the signal.
Gordon told him the Bonecrusher had returned and was
cornered by a SWAT team. Batman took him on, and the
man who believed he was fighting Batman the night previous
made the same actions as the Bonecrusher. A worker at
his homeless shelter called the police. As the cops
picked up the "crazy" man, Bonecrusher backed
up to a gas truck and ignited it. He was, again, killed.
Batman was taken to the man, and recognized him as Roy
Kane. Kane had no memories; Batman got the man released
into his custody. Doctors found a small surgical scar
and a biochip which had been implanted into his head.
Wayne believed the "missing" personnel records
and his lost memories were linked.
Roy had a seizure, and the Bonecrusher burst into Wayne
Manor. Alfred tranquilized him and he self-destructed.
Roy regained some of the memories he'd been missing
about a project at WayneTech - remote controlled assassins.
Batman followed up on the lead and found Dr. Harbinger
(WayneTech r&d) dead. He got into Harbinger's notes
and learned he was the man who'd been controlling the
Bonecrushers. He also learned that Harbinger had gone
into a permanent host body before "dying."
Wayne went to the top of the "cartel" and
threatened to expose them; they threatened him in return.
Back at home, Bruce was arrested for being a Communist
and using the mind-control project to spy. |

Bruce
was asked about his past, he passed it off as "phases"
he went through while growing up. The only man who could
prove Harbinger was behind the files Bruce had unearthed
was found dead. Bruce was told Henri Ducard was arriving
in Gotham City to testify against him - he was offered
full immunity if he could give goods on Wayne. Coming
out of questioning, an assassination attempt was made
on Wayne. Both of his lawyers were killed.
Earlier, Commissioner Gordon offered his testimony to
Wayne. Wayne played dumb when Gordon mentioned his "suspicions."
Later that night, after he was shot, Gordon lit the
signal, but Batman didn't show up - as he expected.

As
Henri Ducard arrived in Gotham City, Kenneth Harbinger
continued to get accustomed to the body he now inhabited
- the one who'd shot Bruce Wayne. Wayne awakened from
his coma, but there was still a chance he wouldn't be
able to walk. With Batman AWOL for a week, Gordon asked
one of his men to lie and say the vigilante had been
active. Roy discovered the cave as Alfred brought Bruce
home. He insisted on helping; Alfred tried the mind-control
on him and it worked perfectly. He was able to completely
control Roy's body from within the cave. Bruce took
him on a "test drive" - he figured it would
be good for people to see the Batman active. Gordon
realized something was up.
Ducard went to the Feds with the story that Bruce Wayne
was the Batman, but it was rebuked when he was shown
a newspaper - Batman had taken down some kidnappers
the night before. As Ducard left the stationhouse, he
realized Wayne may be in possession of the remote control
device.
Bruce put on the remote control device and had Alfred
alter the frequencies until he found Harbinger. He ended
up in the body of one of the Bonecrushers and realized
Harbinger was using some sort of mind control - he'd
gained control of Riordan, one of the men prosecuting
Wayne. Ducard arrived at Wayne Manor. He offered to
alter his testimony if Wayne would give him a new body
by using Harbinger's device - he knew everything. After
he left, Bruce got a sketch of Harbinger's new look
to Gordon. He told Roy he'd need his body one last time.
Surrounded by the police, Harbinger detonated his apartment.
Batman (Bruce controlling Roy) saw the explosion, but
was busy watching Riordan. Harbinger took over the body
of one of the Bonecrushers and began to talk with Riordan.
Batman burst in. Harbinger attempted to use his mind
control, but didn't realize "Batman" was being
mind-controlled already. Batman chased the Harbinger
Bonecrusher through a window and onto an elevated train
rail. He got his feet caught and was able to get Alfred
to switch him into the Bonecrusher's body. Roy was completely
unaware as to what was going on and attempted to fight
Bruce-as-the-Bonecrusher. They both fell to their deaths
when the train ran by.
The next morning, Bruce came clean to Jeannie. She was
devastated, but promised to never tell the secret.
Riordan, still under Harbinger's influence, came clean,
then was killed by Ducard. The charges against Wayne
were dropped. Gordon visited Wayne and they talked about
Roy - Gordon had seen him and Batman together and knew
Roy wasn't "the" Batman. Gordon left him to
deal with his second lost partner. |
