Catwoman appeared and attacked Natasha (aka Sickle). As they fought, Smart Bomb blasted the Russian. She began taking Strange's gang down one at a time. Black Mask got a report on the situations at hand: Catwoman appeared to be very alive and very healthy. Hugo Strange was seen skipping town. Angle Man, Boris, and Natasha were in police custody. Captain Cold was back in Central City. Mask placed an order for Catwoman's friend. Catwoman thanked her new shape-shifting friend and let him go. Zatanna showed up with some "bad news..."

Catwoman 50

Cover Date: February 2006
Subtitle: Backward Masking part 1
Writer(s): Will Pfeifer
Artists(s): Pete Woods
Storyline: Angelo Bends - Angle Man - was being questioned for the attempted murder of Catwoman. The detectives gave him one of his old triangles from evidence and asked him how it worked. He pulled it out and disappeared. The commed Slam Bradly (still in the Smart Bomb guise) and asked him to befriend the man and meet his boss. Zatanna teleported Catwoman and herself back to Selina's apartment. She made Selina remember why she was no longer a criminal - on the JLA satellite, Zatanna had used her powers to change her. Confused, Selina taped her mouth shut and threw her through the apartment window. Zatanna landed in a garbage dumpster. Catwoman chased her down, but before she could do much damage, Zatanna removed the tape and froze her. She apologized and vanished. Smart Bomb was introduced to Black Mask.

Cover Date: March 2006
Subtitle: Backward Masking part 2
Writer(s): Will Pfeifer
Artists(s): Pete Woods
Storyline: Holly and Karon bumped into Slam at a movie theater. Black Mask watched. Catwoman broke into Wayne Manor and spoke with Bruce. She told him the JLA had mind-wiped her and altered her into becoming a hero. She asked Bruce who she really was. He assured her they could not have changed her - she was always in control of herself. After she left, Bruce contacted Zatanna. On her way home (in a stolen car), Catwoman was pulled over by the police. She escaped and got home to learn Slam had been taken by Black Mask. SmartBomb (actually Slam's son) called the office and told them he was breaking off the undercover gig. He and Catwoman got to Slam at the same time. He was still alive. Sam admitted to her who he was. Black Mask escaped.

Catwoman 52

Cover Date: April 2006
Subtitle: Backward Masking conclusion
Writer(s): Will Pfeifer
Artists(s): Pete Woods
Storyline: A confused Catwoman realized she had blood on her goggles and gloves. Sam Bradley (in the SmartBomb costume) got his father to the hospital. Black Mask had carved a message to Catwoman on his chest. He and Selina had coffee. Afterwards, she checked her mail. In it, there was an envelope which simply read "Selina" and had a drawing of a cat's face. The envelop contained pictures of Holly. She flipped out and went searching for her friend. Holly blew her off. Sam's superior told him he was going to take the fall - probably prison time - for blowing the undercover and going in (in costume) for his father. Selina realized she needed to talk to someone, so she called Sam when their conversation was over, he phone rang and it was played back for her. Black Mask was prepared. They met for lunch and argued over which of them was going to "execute" the plan. Catwoman watched as the SmartBomb suit exploded in mid-flight - someone had sabotaged it. She went to Slam's bedside and told him what she planned to do (he was still unconscious). Using one of the police blimps, she burst into Black Mask's office. At gunpoint, he told her he planned for them to be "arch enemies." Of course, he'd have to kill everyone she cared about. Catwoman got the best of him and put a pistol to his head. She fired.

Selina, or Irena Dubrovna, had relocated to downtown Gotham. She had also just given birth to a daughter (20 inches long / 7lb 8oz) named Helena. Catwoman still prowled the East End. After getting knocked down, she took out three burglars who were stealing cameras. As the cops arrived, someone took pictures and thought her to be a bit off her game. Slam picked Selina up and dropped her off at her new apartment. Holly (with a black eye) met them outside. Angle Man, now obsessed with Catwoman, developed his pictures. One of the men taken down earlier talked to police. Their main suspect in the Black Mask killing was fingered - Catwoman. Batman showed up in Selina's apartment. He brought her daughter gifts - a scholarship to any college and a teddy bear. They talked about the new Catwoman. Angle Man captured Catwoman.

Slam's son visited him at his office. Film Freak met again with Angle Man - he had a lead on the "real" Catwoman - Irena Dubrovna (which was the lead character's name in an old movie called Cat People). Ted Grant was knocking on her door: Holly had been arrested for the murder of Black Mask. Lenahan, the man who pegged Catwoman for Black Mask's murder, didn't believe the woman they had in custody was the same Catwoman. Police got word that two cops had been killed by a falling building while chasing a man who'd stolen a pack of gum from a convenience store. Selina got into costume when Ted refused to call in the JSA. She left him with the baby and headed out. She found Slam passed out drunk in his office. He had no one left on the force that could do him a favor. Film Freak killed a taxi driver, then broke into STAR Labs to break out a giant gorilla.

Subtitle: It's only a Movie part 2
Writer(s): Will Pfeifer
Artists(s): David Lopez, Alvaro Lopez
Storyline: Catwoman (Selina) got to Catwoman (Holly) and began breaking her out. There was little standing in their way - most of the cops were out chasing down the giant ape which had been busted loose from STAR. From the rooftop, they saw the police shooting at the ape. Selina wanted to help it. She swung down and landed on the beast as the SWAT team got the order to fire. She was able to get a canister of knockout gas into its mouth and leap to safety. Slam was thrown out of a bar and wandered into an alley. He thought back on the day he got out of the hospital. Sam and he discussed Catwoman and the murder of Black Mask. Film Freak stopped by and made fun of him before wandering off. The next morning, Selina, Holly, and Karon discussed the previous night's events. Realizing all happened out of movies, Selina knew it was Film Freak's work. Film Freak scored a bomb.
