Storyline: Batman found a dead body while taking down some small time crooks. The body's head had been turned around backwards. Batman traced the kill back to Zeiss - the dead man had delivered his goggles from repair recently. With help from Batgirl, Zeiss was finally taken down.

Storyline: Sasha put up a Christmas tree in Wayne Manor, though Bruce didn't approve. Detective Montoya called in Batman - Santa Klaus, a psychic bent on punishing evil doers, had escaped and was bombing people with presents. Batman eventually tracked him down on Christmas Eve and captured him.

Sasha continued her silence to both her counsel and the police. The Blackgate inmates gave Bruce a hard time and his first day. Alfred visited him and took coded orders. That night, Bruce was attacked in his cell. He put three men in the infirmary.

Storyline: (1) In Wayne Manor, Batman thought back on the past, and the people he'd loved - Vesper, Silver, Selina, Dick, Alfred, Jason, and Jim. In the cave, Robin, Batgirl, and Nightwing were waiting for him. He informed them Bruce Wayne had fled the country on a private jet. They questioned him; he refused to answer. Nightwing flew off the handle when he said Bruce was just a mask he wore in the daytime. Batman evaded him and left after Nightwing accidentally broke the glass on Jason's memorial.
(2) After hearing about a lost historical fiction novel on the Black Bat, Bruce and Dick went back in time to check it out. They helped a conductor on the Underground Railroad free slaves, helping him become the Black Bat.
(3) With Batman away with the JLA, Robin and Batgirl (Dick and Barbara) went out on patrol. Joker had broken out of custody and stolen Mad Hatter's hat. Robin and Batgirl visited Tetch in prison and he helped them defeate Joker with a device that disrupted the mind control.
(4) Batman and Alfred endured the '70s.

Storyline: Batman walked out on Alfred when he wanted to discuss the Bruce Wayne journals. He met with Commissioner Akins, who told him about a series of kidnapping which ended with the victim being burned alive. Batman found the man's driver and questioned him. That led him to the killer and his latest two victims - one he saved, the other died of a heart attack. The killer, calling himself Nicodemus, sent a message to Gotham City.

Storyline: Batman continued to piece together the Nicodemus puzzle. He was questioning a guard when the killer struck at a banquet in honor of Thomas Hart - his surviving victim. Hart was killed and the mayor was taken hostage. Batman saved the mayor, who was strapped to the front of a run-away rail car full of explosives. Batman figured it out - Nicodemus was Hart - all the victims were linked to his parents' deaths or his childhood. Nicodemus was gone.

Storyline: Catwoman found Batman and relayed a message to him from Dr. Thompkins. Leslie told him Gary Sloan was in the hospital and wouldn't last long. Detective Sloan had asked for Batman. He asked him to take over a case for him - the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne. He'd promised their son he'd never stop looking for their killer; he believed in Wayne's innocence, which helped Batman recover part of himself.

Storyline: Catwoman helped Batman find the Joker's gang (Jokerless). They'd kidnapped a high-ranking gangsters. After they took the gang down, Catwoman asked Batman why he'd taken bullets to save a murderer. He realized after all that Bruce Wayne was not a mask - he was Bruce.

Storyline: Batman visited Vesper's grave. He and Nightwing left and headed back to the cave where Robin, Alfred, Batgirl, and Oracle were waiting for them. They went over the entire setup in detail. Luthor had hired David Cain to destroy Wayne. Cain took it upon himself to destroy Batman as well. The guys went after Cain, Batgirl and Oracle stayed behind to help coordinate. The men Robin and Nightwing followed turned out to be decoys. The real Cain was in the cave and attacked Oracle (Batgirl had left to help Nightwing and Robin). Batman was there and went after him. He refused to believe that he was like the assassin. Cain turned himself in for Fairchild's murder. Amherst woke up in Arkham Asylum.

Storyline: Realizing David Cain would be a prime target for assassination, Batman set out to guard him. Oracle warned that Floyd "Deadshot" Lawton was thought to be in Gotham City. While Cain was being transported, Deadshot struck.

Storyline: While Batman was attempting to get Cain to safety, Deadshot struck again. Taunting his former teacher, Deadshot was surprised and attacked by Cain. Cain shot him up. Batman got them both to safety and then medical attention. Cain testified against himself and was placed in a maximum security prison; Deadshot survived.

Storyline: Batman went in to save a young kidnap victim, who's ransom ($10million) had already been paid. The kidnapper, Killer Croc, attacked. Batman realized that he could never have engineered a scheme of that sort, and that Croc appeared physically less human than ever before. Batman subdued him and got the boy to safety. The ransom was taken by Catwoman during their fight. Batman chased her, and fell from a great height when his rope failed. Catwoman delivered the $10million to Poison Ivy.
