Batman 585

Storyline: Batman broke up a fight between some of Penguin's bookies and a man who couldn't pay up. Cobblepot lost the hearing concerning his eviction. Bruce and his lawyer were shot at while exiting a restaurant - he slipped away from his new bodyguard and went to follow the judge who heard Cobblepot's case. He was able to stop Penguin's assassins from hitting the judge and later nearly ruined him by fixing his next lottery.

Storyline: Penguin, in hiding, told his captive how he'd killed Batman: he staged a fake murder / kidnapping with the use of robots. When Batman rescued the boy robot, it exploded. Penguin barely escaped the wrath of the BatSquad. He then turned and shot his captive, Bruce Wayne, and dumped him over the bow of his yacht. Penguin awakened from his daydream when one of his men approached him in his office.

Storyline: Commissioner James Gordon met with his friends on the force for a birthday celebration they were throwing for him. He reminded them of their responsibilities as officers of the law. As he left the bar, he saw Catwoman and attempted to arrest her. He was shot three times in the back, his gun went off and he accidentally shot Catwoman.

Storyline: Batman shook down Matches Malone, but could not get anyone to squeal on the rumored arms shipment. Malone was taken to Scarface and offered a spot in his gang for the way he stood up to Batman. "Malone" (Batman) got into the car with "Batman" (Nightwing). Later that night, he took down the arms deal. Scarface, thinking Malone was a snitch, ordered him dead. Oracle contacted Batman and Nightwing the following night with news that Malone had been shot.

Storyline: Batman told Nightwing the story of the real Matches Malone: he was an arsonist for hire, partnered with his brother. He appeared to have killed his brother before he could rat them out. Later, he killed himself. Batman found his body, buried it next to his brother's and assumed his identity so he could get "in" the underground. When Batman and Nightwing arrived at the scene, they found the dying Malone, who told them the rest of the story: his brother's death had been a suicide, but Matches made it look like a murder. He faked his own death using the body of a man they'd accidentally killed in one of their fires. Batman promised him he'd kill the man who shot him up.

Storyline: After burying the real Matches next to his brother, Batman went on a rampage. Nightwing tried to reason with him, but Batman shrugged him off. Dick visited Barbara and talked about his concerns. With help from Batman, "Matches" took down the Ventriloquist and burned Scarface.

Storyline: Batman learned that Deadshot was in town and went looking for him. He went to Huntress for the scoop on a possible target - Lew Moxon, former mob boss. Bruce Wayne attended a party for Moxon and ran into his daughter, a childhood friend named Mallory. She introduced him to her father and their bodyguard, Philo Zeiss - a man Batman had tangled with recently. Oracle got him information on Zeiss, he had a photographic memory that enabled him to slow down / speed up his vision. Deadshot attacked to view Zeiss's reactions. Batman left in pursuit.

Storyline: Deadshot got away by taking out Batman's jumpline. Bruce dined with the Moxons the next night. When members of the Galante family arrived, Bruce made his exit. Batman got into it with Philo Zeiss, which was the diversion Deadshot needed. He shot Lew Moxon; Batman was shot reacting to it. Moxon was hospitalized and faced paralysis.

Storyline: The FBI tangled with an alien who'd crashed into an abandoned building in Gotham City (the second such incident in a month's time). The alien got the best of them, leaving both agents comatose. Batman located the jeweler who was set to rebuild Philo Zeiss's goggles and got him off the job. Bruce Wayne visited Mallory Moxon and her father at the hospital. As he was leaving, the two FBI agents were being brought in. Batman scoped out the scene where the agents were found and contacted Commissioner Akins about it. Later, he shook down Penguin about his connection to Zeiss. A priest found the alien and took him in.

Storyline: Philo Zeiss found another person to repair his goggles. When they were returned to him, he killed the delivery man. Batman had Batgirl keep an eye on the church / alien situation. She contacted him - the FBI / DEO were moving in. She took them down while Batman went in for the alien. He got needing info from it before it died, and called the JLA to recover the body. Bruce visited the Moxons as Lew was being released from the hospital. Zeiss came to them and begged to get his job back.

Storyline: Batman continued to investigate a possible connection between Lew Moxon and his father (and possibly the death of his father). He cornered Angelo Barretti, a former associate of Moxon. Barretti told him the history: one of Moxon's men was shot. Moxon forced Dr. Wayne to operate on him in his home. The man made a full recovery - Moxon did not order a hit on Thomas and Martha Wayne.

Storyline: Batman continued to take down Jokerized goons while Moxon teetered on war with the other mobs. Batman was able to stop Zeiss from killing a mob boss and his daughter with the help from a Jokerized lunatic dressed as Santa. Zeiss escaped.
